Back in 1857, all of
America was reading the words of Mrs. Bates, a Kingston native who sailed
to California in 1850 on board the Nonantum, a coaler commanded by
her husband. On reaching that state, the Bates undertook hotel keeping in
Marysville for a period from 1851 to 1854.
