A New Town Song?
The Independence

Written & Sung By
Bradford J. Randall, Age 13

First public performance of
"The Independence" was at the Ecumenical Service to celebrate the Town's 275th birthday held at First Congregational Parish Unitarian Universalist on
June 16, 2001

At Kingston village in the countryside,
'Twas the Brig Independence built with pride.
But had the craftsman only knew,
That this very same wood shall be used against you!

Independence, and glory for the town!
Independence, and freedom from the crown!
Independence for me and you.

The Independence ruled the waves,
As she sets to sail the Bay Fundy.
She'd sail the waters so smooth and kind,
And move the oceans with the tide.

Independence, and glory for the town!
Independence, and freedom from the crown!
Independence for me and you.

Her New England sister ships were under sail,
The Independence flew with the November gales.
Seven leagues south of Sable Cape,
The Independence finds her fate.

Independence, and glory for the town!
Independence, and freedom from the crown!
Independence for me and you.

As Captain Sampson sails the shore,
The Independence is evermore,
In the hazard waters of the Maine
Shall the Independence find her fame?

Independence, and glory for the town!
Independence, and freedom from the crown!
Independence for me and you.

In the cold north waters the Yankee crew turned to attack,
The royal warship fired her cannons as an answer back.
The king's Hope only stood but yards away,
The Independence has become the prey.

Independence, and glory for the town!
Independence, and freedom from the crown!
Independence for me and you.

The Yanks didn't yield without a fight,
The Americans fought with all their might.
At the end of that crisp autumn day,
The redcoat flag rose all the way!

Independence, and glory for the crown!
Independence, turned against the town!
Independence for me and you.

In a Halifax prison Sampson spends his days,
As the Independence has the devil to pay.
She fights under the royal name,
And is sunk three months later. What a shame!

Independence, and glory for the town!
Independence, and freedom from the crown!
Independence for me and you.

Her suffering, it is no more,
For she sleeps on the Atlantic floor.
The Brig no longer has to heel,
For the Independence proudly sails the Kingston seal!
