Observer Cartoonist Dead at 52
(January 26, 2004) The staff of the Kingston Observer is deeply saddened by the untimely death of our cartoonist Andy Callahan. I first met Andy over 30 years ago when we both worked on stage productions for the Bay Players.

He could take an idea and expand upon it in a form that was uniquely his own as he did in this cartoon about the possibility there would be no Memorial Day Parade in Kingston.

Andy designed costumes, did set design and an occasional appearance. I acted and directed. His talents were well known among theatre companies throughout the state.

He was also a gifted artist and specialized in cartoons and caricatures. He did it for a living, traveling far and wide to many colleges and corporate functions where his caricatures were in demand.

During the the blizzard of 1978 the Kingston Independent made its appearance. Callahan joined our little band of founders and became an immediate favorite. In 1982 he was named "Cartoonist of the Year" among all weeklies in New England for his beautiful cartoon memorial to Al Capp which appeared in the Independent. His work appeared in the Independent Voice when the Kingston Independent and the Independent Voice merged. Later he would join the Kingston Observer and remain aboard until his death. Andy had the uncanny ability to capture the essence of a person, even from a photograph. He could take an idea and expand upon it in a form that was uniquely his own. There is simply no way our dear Andy can be replaced. We are heartbroken over this loss.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his mother and brothers and the entire extended family.

Farewell, old friend, may your spirit always live on with pen and paper close at hand.
