Support School Renovation April 26

By Dan Sapir

(April 20, 2003) Silver Lake Regional High School was built in 1955. Back in those days it was never expected to handle the pupil numbers it has seen these days. We agree with the Citizens For Silver Lake High School Committee when they say, "The Building is a sprawling, deteriorating facility… necessary improvements were postponed pending Pembroke’s withdrawal."

It is imperative that all three of the tri-town communities (Kingston, Plympton and Halifax) support articles at their respective town meetings dealing with the renovation of the school. Kingston voters will be asked, on April 5 through Article 15 "To see if the Town will vote to approve indebtedness authorized by the Regional School District Committee…for the purpose of constructing, reconstructing, adding to, equipping, remodeling and making extraordinary repairs to the District High School, including the construction and reconstruction of athletic fields…"

A positive vote by all three towns is required, as well as approval at the town election polls for funding it with a debt exclusion. The towns can ill afford to endanger the 73% reimbursement guaranteed by special legislation which pertains to this specific regional endeavor. There is no question that the state and all its cities and towns are facing financial hardship. The fact is however, that the education of our youth is paramount. The old adage is true: If you think education is expensive, try ignorance. Vote YES at the April 5 Annual Town Meeting. Vote YES at the April 26 elections.
