(July 2002) This column is
written with apologies to Howie Carr and Mike Barnicle for stealing
their format. With that said, no one asked me, but…
 |
It’s
time for those picketers outside Victory Market to find real
jobs. |
 |
While
no political contest should go unchallenged, if ever there
were two people who deserve a "coast” to re-election, they
are Tom O’Brien and Terry Murray. |
 |
Our
property taxes in town are too high. |
 |
Our
roads are too clogged. You can walk through Kingston Center
faster than you can drive through. Ditto on some days for
Route 106. |
 |
The
death penalty is the right level of punishment for whoever
torched the Pottle Street barn. |
 |
I can’t
stand when cashiers (in Kingston and elsewhere) return change
by balancing coins on top of bills instead of handing them
back separately. |
 |
Mary
Lou Murzyn is an exceptional Town Clerk and public servant. |
 |
Yes,
there are others who fit the "exceptional” category also,
but let’s save some suspense for a future column. However,
Jon Alberghini will leave big shoes to fill. And it’s good
to see Mimi MacInnis back in the service of the town once
again. |
 |
We don’t need a
new town hall, no matter what anyone says. We really don’t
need a lot of what we approved, but don’t get me started. |
 |
Speaking of
hideous traffic conditions, just wait to see what Evergreen
and Summer Streets are like when Pottle Street is in (you
should pardon the expression) full swing. |
 |
Speaking of
ballfields, where was the regional school committee’s
proposal when the Pottle Street project was on the table? |
 |
Why don’t we
combine the two and save some money? |
 |
How long will it
be before the "T” tries to charge Kingston a "user fee”? |
 |
Speaking of fees,
I wonder how much the legal tab is for ‘researching’ the
ownership of the Pottle Street barn. |
· I miss the old
Dairy Queen. My waistline doesn’t, but my tastebuds do.
· Town meetings were definitely more entertaining when Hjalmar
Wisti and Tommy Van were "regulars.”
· Bill Martin may well have been one of the best selectmen this
town ever had.
· Taxpayers might be more receptive to building new facilities if
we’d do something with the old ones and recoup some of the costs…unless
we’re going for that "ghost town” look. Why don’t we sell
off some of our unneeded real estate? For starters there’s the
Town House, the Maple Avenue School, the Adams Library. Auction them
off. Cash and carry. Hey, it worked for Richard Cretinon.
· I always knew Neil Corcoran was a good mechanic. Now I know he’s
a good writer, also.
· Summer in Kingston isn’t complete without at least one trip to
the Bradford House Sunday brunch.
· The "Open Meeting Law” was not intended as merely a
suggestion, just as The Ten Commandments weren’t The Ten
Suggestions.
· We should enact a spending cap in this town and stick to it.
Proposition 2 ½ is a joke.
· Say what you will about the bloodbath the Democrats engaged in
earlier this year over the Joe Palombo-Joe McDonough dispute, but at
least the Democrats have a town committee. Republicans, take note.
· How many candidates are there for Plymouth County Sheriff?
· Melanie Meeker will be missed on the finance committee.
· We should offer door prizes at next year’s town meeting to
stimulate attendance, in case the ‘zero quorum’ initiative doesn’t
pass.
· Jerry Jewers deserves a big ‘thank you’ from the town for all
his hard work over the years at the highway department. He has
always been a true gentleman.
· Regional school committee members who conduct illegal unposted
meetings by e-mail deserve to have their computers infected by
viruses.
That’s it for another month, folks. Enjoy July. Until next time... |
