Local Scouts on New Mexico Camping Adventure
Nine Kingston Boy Scouts and their leaders, Brian Wallace, Sean Kilduff and Peter Burke are now in Cimarron, New Mexico on a two week adventure of a lifetime. The group is at the Philmont Scout Ranch, a 141,000 acre facility affording a true test of endurance, skill and brotherhood. Philmont, still a working cattle ranch, is the largest youth camp in the world! The facility offers scouts 35 different adventure choices, or “treks”, Troop 49 chose #26 for its full range of unique challenges, including a climb of Mount Baldy which looms 12,441 feet above the town of Kingston.
The ranch provides high adventure for the scouts amid a backdrop of rugged wilderness. Opportunities offered include horseback riding, burro packing, mountain biking, gold panning, hiking and chuckwagon dinners; what could be more appealing for a summer of everlasting memories, character development and camaraderie. Reporting to the Observer by iPhone Scout Leader Brian Wallace states that “The staff here at Philmont is exceptional, the views are truly amazing, the young men are a joy to be with as we are all embarking on life-changing experiences.
Philmont began as a small camp in 1938 and since that time played host to over 860,000 scouts and their leaders and is the oldest such ranch in the country. The entourage will return from Cimarron on August 6, with dozens of stories to follow.
