The
Plymouth Adventure...
Critics hailed this 1952 extravagant, Academy Award-winning
retelling of the voyage of the Mayflower as "an
inspiring bit of Americana" (The Hollywood Reporter) and
"a film milepost" (Variety). Spencer Tracy is
Christopher Jones, captain of the ship-for-hire Mayflower,
who agrees to take 100 passengers across the Atlantic and into the
New World. Although he planned to abandon them there and return to
England immediately, he is moved by the tenacity of the pilgrims to
rise up to the challenges of the rigorous voyage, and vows his
support to their cause. With Gene Tierney, Van Johnson, Lloyd
Bridges and Leo Genn. |

...ended
in Kingston
The 1952 Academy Award
winning movie, Plymouth Adventure had a post-production Kingston
connection. The real star of the movie was a 1/5th scale model of
the Mayflower. After the film was shot MGM studios kept the 10 ton
replica in storage for a number of years -- and then decided to get
rid of it.
After changing owners
a number of times the model found a temporary home in the showroom
of Coughlin's Antiques (Rt. 80). It remained on display for several
years before being sold to Mayflower Van lines in Fenton, Missouri.
Reportedly the model is on display at their corporate headquarters
(sadly, no mention of it can be found on their website - www.mayflower.com).
