Getting Your Car Ready for Winter... Sep 22, 2006 Fall is coming, folks, to be followed by winter. Now is the time to get the car(s) ready for the bad weather. I know times have been tough, with gas being over $3 a gallon for the better part of the summer; with kids back to school, which seems to get more and more expensive every year, especially those who have kids in college. Mine all graduated several years ago, but I remember how expensive it was then. I can’t believe how much it is now. I see it in my business. Customers that were normally great on preventive maintenance have let things slide. I can’t fault them one bit. Money’s tight. When gas (oil) inflates as fast as it did in such a short time, it is felt throughout the economy.
Politically Uncorrected Aug 18, 2006 I was in Vermont over the weekend, and if you know anything about Vermont, you know it's a very politically correct state, borderline socialist paradise. And taxes are extremely high. Activists of any and all types pretty much dominate any public debates. How to tell? Bumper stickers. Bumper stickers on cars that are total *%$! boxes. But anyway, one sticker in particular caught my eye over the weekend, "Celebrate Diversity." I laughed out loud. Why? Vermont is the whitest state in the union. The woman driving was white and probably has never even met any minorities.
No Good Deed Goes Unpunished Jul 21, 2006 Gather round, Gang. Uncle Neil’s got a cautionary tale for you would-be Good Samaritans. Friday night the bride and I were on our way to the Red Sox game. We were traveling on Route 3 North, and at the Hanover Mall exit, we came upon an accident that apparently had just taken place as dust and dirt was still in the air. The vehicle, which was a General Motors SUV, was at the end of the on ramp and had been turned around. We didn’t see the accident and didn’t know if another vehicle was involved. Linda was driving, and I told her to stop, that we had to see if anyone was hurt. She was in the passing lane and had to get over to the breakdown lane. She came to a stop about 200-250 yards up the road from the accident scene.
Summer Driving Tips to Save Fuel Jun 23, 2006 It's June, the start of summer. How do I know? Easy. Summer Street in the center of town is being torn up again. Is it the 5th or 6th straight year? I'm glad my business isn't dependent on foot traffic.
Gas Prices Too High? Get used to it! May 19, 2006 India and China both have emerging economies. Most of our manufacturing jobs are going to those countries because labor is cheaper, and environmental and bureaucratic meddling is at a minimum. This is leading to a middle class in these countries. An automobile that was once seen as a status symbol in those countries is now seen as a necessity, just like here. After driving a car, going back to riding a bicycle just doesn't cut it.
Question & Answer Time Mar 17, 2006 I own a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and at the end of last summer, the A/C system stopped blowing cold. I was going to replace the Jeep with a new one, but finances dictated otherwise. What do you suggest?
A Few Rants and Raves Feb 18, 2006 After being in Kingston Center for 25 years, I'm wondering where the time has gone. Thus, these musings in winter.
A day in the life... Jan 20, 2006 When I opened Neil's Auto over 25 years ago, I was young, full of P&V and thought I knew it all. Wrong! While I was experienced in the diagnostic and repairs department, I was very green when it came to business. I was lucky enough that Benny MacFarlane was still operating a small shop next to mine to keep himself busy.
Happy Adversity Dec 20, 2005 As I write this, winter is here!! Snow, cold. And this is the kickoff of the 5th year of the Kingston Observer. My editor, Dan Sapir, promised me 100 grand if we made it to five years. Well, here it is!! Dan, where is my 100 grand?
When the Reality of War Hits Home Oct 22, 2005 The war has hit home for my family. I’ve written previously about my nephew, Wesley, who’s 20 years old and serving in Iraq. Ramadi, to be exact, the hotbed of insurgents. He was in his sophomore year at Norwich University in Vermont when his National Guard unit was called up. A lot of people have asked me how he’s doing, so I thought I’d do an update.
When Gas Prices Go Out of Sight Sep 23, 2005 Gas out of sight!! Is it because of Katrina? Yes. Is it price gouging? Yes. But, hey, this is capitalism. It’s what the market will bear...
An Update from the Front... Aug 19, 2005 Last month I wrote of my nephew’s arrival in Iraq for the next year. He’s a specialist E4 from the Vermont National Guard. Thank God for the technology we have such as e-mail as we’ve been able to stay in constant touch. Hey, he’s blood!
Praying for a Safe Return... Jul 22, 2005 As I write this column, it’s just after the 4th of July. Time for a little reflection of the greatness of this country, the freedoms we have that most take for granted every day. How do I know this? As an automotive repair technician, I meet people from all walks of life. After all, most everyone owns a car, and at some point they need service.
New vehicles in Chevrolet’s lineup Jun 17, 2005 Another season straight from winter to summer. Workmen are tearing up Kingston Center. Is this the 4th or 5th straight year in a row? Oh, well, progress... This month we’re going to look at two new vehicles in Chevrolet’s lineup. So up to Maguire Chevrolet in Marshfield I went. I got in contact with salesman Larry Kalis. He explained that Chevy introduced two new models, the Cobalt to replace the Cavalier and the Colorado pickup to replace the S10 pickup.
April 2005 Neil Mobile Apr 17, 2005 After a long winter, spring is finally here! Kudos to the Kingston Highway Department. They're the best. They kept the roads clear and sanded. You only ran into trouble when you crossed the town lines into a surrounding town. Great job!
Family Business Mar 20, 2005 If you live in town, you’ve passed this place numerous times. There are no signs on the building. It’s located between Pleasant and Thomas Street behind the Mobil Station next to Mamma Mia’s. It’s called Kingston Manufacturing Co. It’s a very high tech machine shop. I’ve used them over the years, as they have repaired or fabricated parts that were no longer available.
Randall Prevails on Recount May 14, 2008 After a 30 minute instructional period and less then two hours of counting, Selectman Dennis Randall can finally feel better about continuing in the position. The re-count showed no change in his three vote victory over ZBA Chairman John Haas, 386-383. Not a single ballot was ever challenged during the process. Randall was gracious in after the process as was Haas.
It is with a heavy heart that The Observer announces the death of Mauro Mazzilli, 65, of 13 Cedar Lane in Rocky Nook. EMT's were called to his home earlier this morning and he was pronounced dead at the Jordan Hospital. Mauro was a colorful man who loved the political process and being a part of it. He most recently ran for Selectman. Mauro had many friends and had a kind heart. We will miss him terribly and find it difficult to believe he is gone. Our heart goes out to his wife Dotty, his children and his beloved grandchildren.
We will pass on more specific information after we speak with Dotty.
The re-count for the three year Selectman's seat will take place Wednesday, May 14 in room 220, second floor, Kingston Town Hall. Dennis Randall won the seat by three votes over John Haas. The issue will be put to rest around 4-5 hours later.
MARTIN RESIGNS
Assessor William Martin has resigned his seat but will continue on as Veteran's Agent. Details to follow.
GRINHAM REINSTATED
Tax Collector employee Eileen Grinham has been reinstated to her job following a Union challenge and a closed door Selectmen's Hearing after being fired by Collector Priscilla Palombo. No other particulars are available but the woman is back at her desk
Kingston Reporter Wishes to Correct Error May 1, 2008 I just got off the phone with Kingston Reporter Editor Scott Smith who wanted me to know, and to pass on to our web readers, the fact that a portion of a recent post election story was incorrect.
