Food Prices are Rising - Tips to Outsmart the Register Apr 17, 2008 With food prices on the dramatic rise, consumers need to get creative on how to reduce their bills while still leaving the store with food for a week. My grovery bill used to hit nearly $300 per week. Thanks to some store savvy strategies, we have (and you can too!) cut the bill in half! Here are some tips to make this possible.
I’ll Have a Gym and Colonic with a Twist of Lime Mar 4, 2008 Have you stuck to your New Year’s Resolutions? By February most people are off the wagon. Me? I’m going strong with my resolutions. I wanted to work out more, cleanse my body and eat healthier foods. Let’s start with the gym. I started teaching a yoga class to force me to go. I’m the type of gal that needs someone to pay me to workout, so for $25 an hour, I do downward dogs, bridge lifts and deep breathe with some great men and women at Namaste Yoga Studio in Wareham, Massachusetts.
Is the economy affecting our choices for food? Jan 29, 2008 I read an interesting article in the December 17th issue of the New York Times. Food Network’s ratings have dropped a staggering 15% for their "In The Kitchen" weekend block of instructional cooking programs.
Food to Fall For: A Seasonal Flavor Fest Nov 27, 2007 For those of you wondering what to do with all those extra fall fruits and vegetables, I have some great new ideas. Fall is my favorite time of the year. I love the cool, crisp air that instantly reminds me of brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. The flavors and foods are simple, rustic and delicious.
The Thanksgiving Menu Oct 30, 2007 With Thanksgiving around the corner, I have been contemplating my menu endlessly. Do I stick to traditional or do I venture outside the box and switch things up a bit? I think back to the Thanksgiving spreads my mother cooked, and she was traditional with a twist. Her stuffing had roasted chestnuts and I remember her scoring them with an X so they did not explode in the oven. I helped open them up after they baked and I adored their firm, yet soft consistency in the stuffing. My dad LOVES giblets, so on occasion my mom would include them in the stuffing. I will be the first to admit that I love giblets too. My mom was not a big fan but she did it for him and he appreciated every bite.
Feasting on a budget banquet Sep 28, 2007 This month I mastered roasting chickens. I rarely roast chickens, unless I do it in my Showtime Rotisserie and roast them whole. That was my initial intention. Stop & Shop had roasting chickens on sale for sixty nine cents per pound and I sent my husband to the store to get four of them. No luck. They were out. In fact, they are still out. Rather than pay nearly four dollars a pound for boneless skinless chicken breasts, I opted for Perdue’s cut whole chicken for $1.79 per pound. It amazes me that Perdue charges one dollar and ten cents per pound more just to cut the chicken. Or are we that lazy and willing to pay that much more?
Kids Don’t Count Calories - That’s Mom’s Job Aug 27, 2007 I always know when summer is over and school is about to begin. The first tell tale signs occur when the grey hairs start popping up left and right on my head, eyebrows and probably my underarms if I let the hair grow long enough. I have a few extra wrinkles around my mouth from yelling to break up fights, I look mad even when I’m not and I search the malls endlessly for a black and white striped referee outfit just to look the part.
The Culinary Adventures of Suzy Suburb: Expecting- a new addition... May 21, 2007 The past month has been crazy. The kitchen project is not complete, but thankfully cooking demonstrations and my pregnant sister-in-law have been able to keep my mind off the mess. I had the pleasure of cooking for the Pembroke Women’s Cooking Club this past week and I just adore these ladies.
The Culinary Adventures of Suzy Suburb: Plant them and they will grow. Maybe... Apr 23, 2007 I love Spring. The birds come back to the feeders on my deck, they poop all over the patio furniture, the squirrels drive my dogs nuts, and it is time to plant my herbs indoors in preparation for another fun game of “Do They Live or Do They Die”. My first four years of indoor herb and flower planting didn’t go so well. Year one consisted of five 72 pack cells and hundreds of packets of seeds. Let’s just say, I over did it, the watering became a pain in the butt and I gave up on them.
The Culinary Adventures of Suzy Suburb: Confessions of a Coffee Lover… Feb 23, 2007 I found out something has been brewing at my brother’s house recently. My perky sister-in-law and apparently many of her friends are having an affair with the same man. Turns out my brother Steven is even in on the fun. Of course this comes as a surprise to me, and naturally I had to ask a few “urning” questions? Who is this mystery man, what makes him so special and why are so many women (and my brother) willing to share him?
The Culinary Adventures of Suzy Suburb: A Resolution to Reduce... Jan 20, 2007 Food has taken me everywhere this month...and then some. First off...the stove saga. We last left off where Suzy Suburb blew out her oven three months ago. On Christmas morning, the stove took a turn for the worse. The broiler died, and I managed to smash a glass bowl containing corn cake batter into one of the burners. Down to only three burners, the oven was sending me an urgent message and I had to listen. After loads of emails offering tips (thanks to all and I apologize if some were not answered), I went in search of a super hero stove at Sears in the Independence Mall...
The Culinary Adventures of Suzy Suburb: A Resolution to Reduce... Dec 16, 2006 When a new year approaches, I never make a resolution to lose weight. It is a guaranteed failure. I can remember all of those January’s where I ate so healthy the first week of the year, and then rewarded myself for the next 51 weeks with chocolates and gummy candy. This year, I have promised to make simple changes in my existing routine to get more out of what I eat and how I workout.
Randall Prevails on Recount May 14, 2008 After a 30 minute instructional period and less then two hours of counting, Selectman Dennis Randall can finally feel better about continuing in the position. The re-count showed no change in his three vote victory over ZBA Chairman John Haas, 386-383. Not a single ballot was ever challenged during the process. Randall was gracious in after the process as was Haas.
It is with a heavy heart that The Observer announces the death of Mauro Mazzilli, 65, of 13 Cedar Lane in Rocky Nook. EMT's were called to his home earlier this morning and he was pronounced dead at the Jordan Hospital. Mauro was a colorful man who loved the political process and being a part of it. He most recently ran for Selectman. Mauro had many friends and had a kind heart. We will miss him terribly and find it difficult to believe he is gone. Our heart goes out to his wife Dotty, his children and his beloved grandchildren.
We will pass on more specific information after we speak with Dotty.
The re-count for the three year Selectman's seat will take place Wednesday, May 14 in room 220, second floor, Kingston Town Hall. Dennis Randall won the seat by three votes over John Haas. The issue will be put to rest around 4-5 hours later.
MARTIN RESIGNS
Assessor William Martin has resigned his seat but will continue on as Veteran's Agent. Details to follow.
GRINHAM REINSTATED
Tax Collector employee Eileen Grinham has been reinstated to her job following a Union challenge and a closed door Selectmen's Hearing after being fired by Collector Priscilla Palombo. No other particulars are available but the woman is back at her desk
Kingston Reporter Wishes to Correct Error May 1, 2008 I just got off the phone with Kingston Reporter Editor Scott Smith who wanted me to know, and to pass on to our web readers, the fact that a portion of a recent post election story was incorrect.
