Two Silver Lake Regional High School Speech Students have earned the right to attend the CFL Grand National Speech competition in Appleton, Wisconsin during Memorial Day Weekend.

Bryce Fallon, son of Frank and Gail Fallon of Halifax qualified in the category of Prose/Poetry. His poetry deals with the tragedy of children dying young while his prose piece is a tragic-comedic piece about a resentful husband playing a game of Scrabble with his wife. After a time, the man believes that the words are driving him to murder. Bryce is a Junior and Treasurer of the Speech and Debate Team.

Michael Moura, son of Bob and Barbara Moura of Kingston in the category of memorized Declamation. He interprets a commencement address by Roger Rosenblatt delivered in 1998 to the graduates of Brigham Young University in Utah. The speech is titled “Get a Job” and is a tongue in cheek address on aiming high. Michael is a sophomore.
A third student, Lauren Smolic earned the right to compete at Nationals for the second year. Unfortunately the lingering effects of being in a recent auto accident forced her out of the competition.

The Silver Lake Speech & Debate Team competed in all 13 competitions offered in Massachusetts this year. In addition, Silver Lake hosted its own highly successful tournament in February. Last year Silver Lake hosted the State Finals. The season runs the entire year and Silver Lake has made the most of a busy schedule having won Sweepstakes Awards at all tournaments and maintaining its status of being in the top 10 teems in The Commonwealth which includes schools like Newton South, Catholic Memorial, Shrewsbury, Natick, Sacred Heart, Bancroft, and Milton Academy.

The Team is coached by Daniel Sapir who has completed his fourth year as Team Advisor. He holds a BA and MS in Speech & Theatre from Emerson College.
