Page 2 of 3 1 2 3 The Culinary Adventures of Suzy Suburb: A Resolution to Reduce... [Dec. 16, 2006] When a new year approaches, I never make a resolution to lose weight. It is a guaranteed failure. I can remember all of those January’s where I ate so healthy the first week of the year, and then rewarded myself for the next 51 weeks with chocolates and gummy candy. This year, I have promised to make simple changes in my existing routine to get more out of what I eat and how I workout.
The Culinary Adventures of Suzy Suburb: Thankful for My Stovetop [Nov. 17, 2006] Alas the holidays are upon us…time for pies, cookies, turkeys and oven baked sides. Every year I bake until my house feels like a sauna. Chip and the kids walk around with sweat dripping off their bodies begging me to turn off the oven. My kitchen floor looks like I unsuccessfully used flour bags for juggling and the kitchen sink is piled high with mixing bowls glued together by leftover batters. This is a yearly tradition for me and my poor husband and kids have no say in the matter whatsoever… until this year. Something suspicious occurred this year, something so upsetting that I will most definitely require some form of therapy to get past: my oven died.
The Culinary Adventures of Suzy Suburb: My Mom... the Queen of the Crepe [Oct. 27, 2006] I was in Kingston Tuesday night, and I have to say, I had a great time. I taught the first class in my four week cooking series with the Recreation Department. I had six women, one of which was with the Recreation Department. That caused some initial anxiety... if this food came out terrible, I now ran the risk of every town department finding out. Ouch.
The Culinary Adventures of Suzy Suburb [Sep. 22, 2006] Since appearing on the Next Food Network Star two years ago, people are constantly asking me when and if I am going to do another cooking show. Realizing I tragically resemble Rachael Ray and it is highly unlikely I will have a show on the Food Network, I went back to the drawing board with my cooking show ideas. How could I continue to do what I love but set myself apart in a Rachael dominated universe. Women with the name Rachael seem to do well in our culture. Rachel, played by Jennifer Anniston from the popular sitcom Friends dominated television in the 90's. Her haircut, appropriately nicknamed "The Rachel" made it on every female head of hair, including mine.
New Gadgets Equal New Recipes [Aug. 18, 2006] I love discovering new culinary gadgets and accessories. Last Christmas I begged my husband for a panini press. I was dying to make an apple and gouda wholegrain panini drizzled with honey. Instead, he gave me the Showtime Rotisserie.
East Bay Grille, Goldilocks and the Three Beers [Jul. 21, 2006] For a week now, my girlfriends Kelly and Jennifer (with golden locks for hair) and I decided we needed a night out. Jennifer is single and Kelly and I are married so we needed a place with a crowd that wasn’t too young, wasn’t too old but was just the right mix of single aged men for Jennifer to choose from.
Father’s Day Feast [Jun. 23, 2006] I was born on Father’s Day and I always remember being told as a child that I was his gift that day. So every year when the holiday rolls around, I find myself wanting to do something special for my dad. It always involves food. I used to take him out to breakfast every year at Persy’s Place. We both pigged out on their Yankee Special, he’d eat three eggs and I ‘d eat two. We shared coffee, conversation and laughs, and I loved it.
Wet Weather Funk [May 19, 2006] Wet weather is depressing. With all of the rain in recent weeks, I've found myself indoors, moping around and eating everything in sight. It happens to the best of us. It's what perpetual dieters refer to as the "funk". Antything can start the funk and for me it was the depressing weather. A good funk lasts for only a meal. It's the ole "I'm gonna go out for lunch to the most fattening location in town and munch away the rain".
decadent delites: Making the Ultimate Sacrifice [Apr. 14, 2006] A few years ago, I always shared my favorite healthy products on the market. I have literally taste tested my way through every diet food on every shelf of every store in every supermarket in the surrounding area. It’s like a part-time job but it costs ME money. So why do I do it? For that one day that you try out a coffee creamer that promises to be as rich and creamy as the full fat version…and it actually is…for zero fat and only 20 calories.
So, I'm asking you, what's healthy in your pantry? [Feb. 18, 2006] Some of my best recipes have been concocted out of leftovers or miscellaneous items in the pantry that I need to make use of. Once a month, I'll skip grocery shopping for the week just to make use of these products. One of the best questions I was asked when being considered for a finalist position on the Next Food Network Star was "What is in your fridge right now, no lying".
Swim Your Way to Success! [Jan. 20, 2006] One of my fondest childhood memories in Kingston was watching the older kids rope dive into a private pond somewhere in between South Street and Elm Street. There was a big tree with strong branches that hung over the water. Someone had tied a rope to a high branch so kids could climb the tree, swing from the rope and plummet into the water below. I never had the guts to do it myself because I couldn’t swim. I was never interested in sports as a kid and swimming seemed to fall into that category. I avoided it at all costs. So how does someone who doesn’t swim become an Aqua Fitness instructor, and better yet, want to run an aquatic program for a wellness center?
Create YOUR Weight Loss Fix for 2006 [Dec. 20, 2005] The New Year is always a cause of anxiety among habitual dieters. I used to spend the months of November and December pigging out on everything taboo knowing I could erase it all with just one New Year resolution. Every year, my first resolution was to lose weight once and for all. It never lasted more than a week.
Could you pleeeeaaaase not pass the butter? [Nov. 22, 2005] Most dieters, like myself dread Thanksgiving and all the tasty temptations that accompany it. Do you blame us? Buttery rich stuffing with sautéed onions, cranberries and sausage, butternut squash sweetened with loads of brown sugar, and made velvety rich by... yup you guessed it... more butter.
Going Back to School with Fun and Healthy Lunches [Aug. 19, 2005] It is officially back to school time. With two small children of my own, I know the challenges moms and dads face with finding healthy lunch options for the kids. Mine used to want to munch on chips, cookies and soda. With all the controversy surrounding school lunches and how to make them healthy, I wanted to offer you some tips and treats that will satisfy your child’s sweet tooth, yet keep them energized and healthy during school hours. Just remember, they have to eat what you pack them. Be firm, and make healthier choices for your children. It may take a few weeks, but they will eventually accept their new food choices as standard and just go with the flow.
The “Write” Bite... [Jul. 22, 2005] People always ask me what steps are guaranteed for weight loss success. Most people feel this is a no brainer; eat less and move more. However, there are other tools and tricks for weight loss success that some people may overlook…like journaling. In the weight loss world, journaling means that you write down what you eat and drink every day. You track your water consumption, fruit and vegetable intake, dairy, as well as your physical activity, moods and your weight.
