Donnie Douglas (Highway Patrol Trooper W. E. Lane) was investigating a fatal accident that occurred about 4:40 this morning just north of Rowland on I-95. Details were sketchy, but Lane said that there were six people in a Toyota SUV that was traveling north, apparently on a return trip to Massachusetts after the group had attended a Scout camp in Key West, Fla., when it wrecked and overturned.
Lane said that the dead person was a 15-year-old girl. He said one person had to be transported to Duke University Medical Center, another was undergoing surgery at Southeastern Regional Medical Center, and three people suffered “minor” injuries.
He said all of those in the car were young people except for a chaperone. None of their names were available.

KINGSTON —
A Kingston teenager was killed this morning when the SUV she was a passenger in rolled over on Interstate 95 in Lumberton, NC.
North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper W.E. Lane said Laura Guidoboni, 15, was found dead at the scene after being ejected. The single vehicle accident occurred around 4:40 a.m. Guidoboni, of 15 Old Orchard Lane, was a sophomore at Notre Dame Academy in Hingham.
Lauren Smolic, 16, also of Kingston, a junior at Silver Lake Regional High School, sustained critical injuries and was taken to Duke University Medical Center. Guidoboni and Smolic were the only passengers not wearing seatbelts.
Lane said the driver of the SUV, Devin Rebello, 17, of Kingston, and two other passengers told police they had been cut off by a tractor trailer just before the accident. Rebello, a senior at Silver Lake Regional High School, was driving 80 miles per hour in a 65 mile per hour zone and over-corrected two times before the vehicle rolled over, according to Lane.
North Carolina State Highway Patrol 1st Sgt. Freddy Johnson said Rebello has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and released. She will be summonsed to North Carolina deal with the charges, Johnson said. Rebello is the daughter of Kingston Police Chief Joseph Rebello.
Lane said the SUV was occupied by six people – five teenagers and an adult chaperone – returning from a trip to Key West, FL.
The chaperone, Mark Guidoboni, 49, of Kingston, Laura’s father, was in serious condition at Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton, Lane said.
Rebello and fellow passengers Jonathan Guidoboni, 17, of Kingston and Ryan Pittsley, 18, of Plympton received minor injuries.
Speed, Seat Belts Cited in Road Deaths

LUMBERTON — Excessive speed and the lack of seat-belt use are cited as the cause for the deaths of two females in unrelated accidents in Robeson County on Monday morning.
Laura Guidoboni, a 15-year-old from Massachusetts, and Veronica Dunn Locklear, 36, of Maxton, were both killed when they were thrown from their vehicles, according to the Highway Patrol.
Guidoboni and five others were returning to their Kingston, Mass., homes on Interstate 95 after a trip to Key West, Fla., after attending a week-long scuba diving camp when the accident happened about 4:40 a.m.
They were traveling in a 2000 Toyota Land Cruiser driven by 17-year-old Devin Rebello, according to the patrol. Also in the vehicle were Laura’s father and the trip’s chaperon, Mark Guidoboni, 49, his son, Jonathan, 17, Lauren Smolic, 15, and Ryan Pittsley, 18.
Laura Guidoboni and Smolic were in the third-row seat in the rear of the vehicle and were not wearing seat belts, according to a report by Trooper W.E. Lane. The two girls were thrown from the vehicle as it flipped several times near mile marker six on I-95.
All six people were taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center and Smolic, suffering with head injuries, was later transported to Duke Medical Center. She was in intensive care this morning.
Mark Guidoboni underwent surgery for leg injuries at SRMC, and was listed in good condition this morning. The others were treated for minor injuries.
Rebello was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle. The patrol estimated his speed at 80 mph.
Four of the five teens attended Silver Lake High School in Kingston, Mass. Smolic and Rebello are star students and on the debate and speech team at Silver Lake.
Dan Sapir, the coach of the debate team said, “I spoke with the team, they are shaken up and sad about what happened.’
He said Laura Guidoboni had many friends at Silver Lake, although she attended Notre Dame Academy in Hingham, Mass.
“It is tragic, all of the kids that I have come in contact with (involved in the accident) are the best we have to offer ... just terrific young people,” Sapir said.
About three hours later, Locklear was killed in a single-car accident on Red Banks Road
Locklear was traveling north in a 2005 Mazda sedan at approximately 65 mph in the posted 55 mph zone when she ran off the road to the right, 1st Sgt. Freddy Johnson said.
She overcorrected and lost control of the vehicle, which struck two poles near the end of a driveway and ended up in a ditch.

Ballfield Bait and Switch?[Apr. 17, 2008] No mention of athletic fields in engineering contract
Tell ‘em you’re building ball fields and then give ’em a road instead. The details of the ‘Baseball Landfill Reuse Contract’ have no mention of ball fields, sports, or recreational use. Such amenities are missing from the Weston & Sampson proposal. What is mentioned, in considerable detail is the intent to build a grand entrance to Thorndike’s dream village.
