Three days of film shooting ended in Kingston last week for a new movie called The Box, starring Cameron Diaz, James Marsden and Frank Langella. Camera crews, lighting technicians, sound people and a score of other production personnel worked around the clock utilizing the room facilities, hallways and pool at the Inn at Plymouth Bay. The crew was in Ipswich filming at a country club prior to arriving in Kingston. On Friday the company packed up and headed back to Boston where they will create sets at a large sound stage facility. It is estimated that shooting, which began on November 17, will conclude sometime at the end of January. Long days of editing and other production elements will follow and tradition would dictate that the film would be released on or before this time next year.
The Observer chatted with media liaison Scott Levine who works out of Utopia Films, Boston. He said the film is loosely based on the Isaac Asimov short story, Button, Button, a story that first appeared in early. The book and the film title, The Box, can be described as a Science Fiction thriller. Levine said that reading the story would really not give you an idea of where the film is coming from. "It is a brilliant adaptation with an impressive cast and crew". He would not divulge why the Inn’s pool was completely covered over with a silver foil material. "You cannot imagine how that pool, in that condition, will be utilized. I wish I could tell you."
The movie appears to be about a young couple and their child, receive a wooden box as a present which yields sinister consequences. It seems that by pressing a button on or in the box, a windfall of $1 million will be realized, but with a price; the death of another person somewhere in the world. One can see the moral dilemma that the family will face as they trace the true nature of their humanity.
Levine said that more and more films are being shot in Massachusetts because of the tremendous tax incentives that are offered in the Commonwealth. "Additionally, there is a vast pool of competent technical people in the Boston/Providence area and wonder shooting locations" said Levine.
The Vineyard Christian Church served as a staging area for feeding the cast and crew, with all meals being catered by a Los Angeles firm specializing in this venue. The Inn at Plymouth Bay was the only Kingston site utilized.
Cameron Diaz is a 36 year old actress and former fashion model. She is best known for her roles in. The Mask, There’s Something About Mary, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Shrek, The Gangs of New York, and Charlie’s Angels. Diaz has dated actor Matt Dillon and performer Justin Timberlake.
Kingstonians will certainly make it a point to taken in the movie when it opens and learn the reason behind why the entire patio at the Inn at Plymouth Bay is covered in foil. "It will be well worth the wait" said Levine.

Tell ‘em you’re building ball fields and then give ’em a road instead. The details of the ‘Baseball Landfill Reuse Contract’ have no mention of ball fields, sports, or recreational use.
