EMT's were called to his home earlier this morning and he was pronounced dead at the Jordan Hospital. Mauro was a colorful man who loved the political process and being a part of it. He most recently ran for Selectman. Mauro had many friends and had a kind heart. We will miss him terribly and find it difficult to believe he is gone. Our heart goes out to his wife Dotty, his children and his beloved grandchildren.
We will pass on more specific information after we speak with Dotty.
God Bless Mauro.

The re-count showed no change in his three vote victory over ZBA Chairman John Haas, 386-383. Not a single ballot was ever challenged during the process. Randall was gracious in after the process as was Haas.

Ballfield Bait and Switch? [Apr. 17, 2008] No mention of athletic fields in engineering contract
Tell ‘em you’re building ball fields and then give ’em a road instead. The details of the ‘Baseball Landfill Reuse Contract’ have no mention of ball fields, sports, or recreational use. Such amenities are missing from the Weston & Sampson proposal. What is mentioned, in considerable detail is the intent to build a grand entrance to Thorndike’s dream village.
Will Thorndike’s 40-R be Wrecked by the Recession? [Apr. 17, 2008] You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to see and feel what’s going on with the economy. What with gasoline averaging about $3.20 a gallon and home heating oil pushing the $4.00 a gallon level, the average Joe is being pushed to the limit. Foreclosures are rampant and you now see signs promoting “selling short”, meaning if you sell your home for less then the outstanding mortgage balance, the bank could forgive you of the difference… everybody is just looking to cut their losses. Food prices are climbing as is the cost of commercial travel. We can’t even get away on the cheap in order to lick our wounds.

Fiore Says: Money Grab Ain’t Over ‘til it’s All Over [Apr. 17, 2008] Sewer Commission Chairman Elaine Fiore is still seething over the money grab that occurred at Town Meeting. Selectmen Mark Beaton may have won the battle, but could very well lose the war. In an effort to balance the budget “on the backs of 1,500 sewer users” according to Fiore, Beaton played a recording of eight or so years back showing then FinCom Chairman Melanie Meeker “hoping” that the money advanced the Sewer Commission at that time be paid back. That money was what seeded the Sewer account in order for the new department to establish itself with a budget.

This Election Cycle Could Bring a Bevy of New Faces [Mar. 4, 2008] It’s either feast or famine when it comes to citizens seeking political office. This year the April elections could see a record field of Selectman candidates with interest in a single Planning Board seat, a critical opening for the Town Treasurer’s position and maybe even a rare race for Assessor.
