New Town Hall on Track for Spring Opening By Dan Sapir (November 14) Although the contracting company projects an end of February completion date, the Town Hall Building Committee is more cautiously predicting a March/April move-in date to the new Town Hall currently under construction on Evergreen Street. Committee Chairman Ron Gleason told the Observer that the $2.7 million two level project is still within budget and credits his committee for holding to tight reigns. Color renderings and a scale model of the building were nixed because of the $5,000 price tag that would have been associated with it. The long awaited structure, which will house the principle components of the Town’s business, will occupy just under 22,000 square feet of interior space which factors in storage areas. It will sit on a 14.2 acre site on Evergreen Street which also includes the new Highway Building and the Animal Control complex. There will be parking for a minimum of 80 vehicles with auxiliary space available. The fully air conditioned building will be heated by gas. There will be six conference rooms and a large meeting hall capable of accommodating 100 people. The Committee is taking on the job of seeking a state of the art cable facility typical of what may be found in Duxbury and Plymouth. Currently, departments are making color selections for the interior décor. Naturally, the structure is fully handicapped accessible with an elevator and all other ADA compliance, long awaited features that have been lobbied for years. The state has held off on any enforcement against the town because of the forward movement of the new facility. The Committee, amid a very low key
approach, have, for several years, moved the project forward without
controversy and budget crises. Members of the committee are Ron Gleason,
Paul Armstrong, Frank Catani, David Colter, David Holmes, John LaBrache and
a member of the Board of Selectman. Also under their charge was the
construction of the new Animal Control Facility that was completed last
Spring. |
