Him and Her April 2009

Him: She has been under the weather for the past week or so. Probably a slight bout of the flue bug with a touch of diverticulitis. When she has these ailments she whines with all kinds of requests: “Make me a nice cup of coffee”, “Can you make me a nice hot cup of tea…I know I had coffee, but ...

Something New

I have been walking on the old farm for many years, now, and thought I had completed the list of animals that are here. I’ve seen turtles, possums, all kinds of song birds and raptors, great blue herons, skunks, red and gray foxes, deer, turkeys, well, you get the idea. But now there is more. I was down by ...

A Time for Love

The birds are singing again! That means spring will come, no matter how hard winter tries to hold on. This winter has been more like the winters I remember as a child. There was lots of snow and much colder weather than we generally have now. I remember that early spring was cold, and no one planted until the end of May. Now we seem to go directly from winter to summer, with no in between weather.

The Cedar on the Corner

As a naturalist, I like to visit places over time. You can see how plants grow, what animals may have come and gone, and what changes people have made to the place. This is a habit I have, that I guess I was born with. I like to garden the same way, putting in small shrubs and bushes so I can watch them grow. I have been watching one red cedar tree for over fifty years, the one that grows on the south west corner of Summer Street and Route 53 in Duxbury...

When saying “no” is an act of courage

Sal DiMasi may have been on the right side of many issues, in the eyes of party activists, and he may well be a brilliant, capable attorney and legislator. But he stood as a symbol of what is wrong with Massachusetts politics at a time when we desperately need symbols of what is right with Massachusetts politics.

Meet Sally Fiore

Everyone needs a friend like Sally Fiore. Last month, Sally, a Kingston artist and photographer gave me a batch of Christmas cookies to die for. Naturally, I begged for the recipe. Sally not only gave me the cookie recipe, but arrived at my home with all of the ingredients in a recycled container with the recipe artfully attached. When was the last time someone did that for you? If you know Sally, actions like this are a daily occurrence in her life. Sally's life is centered around love and kindness. Not t o mention, Sally is ...

Him and Her for February 2009

HIM: She thinks I am too macabre. She says it’s a sign of old age, and I don’t dispute her. She says it is all so depressing and that I am obsessed. She is referring to the fact that I have begun reading the obituary pages in the Ledger, Enterprise and Reporter on a much more regular basis. “Why can’t you pick a paper and read ‘em to your heart’s content?” It’s because I don’t want to miss a single one. The Ledger doesn’t carry all the Brockton deaths nor does the Enterprise cover many of the Quincy notices. The Reporter gives us the Tri-Town area and Pembroke. I don’t want to miss a one of them.
