Nettie still cultivates her interests which include natural remedies, genealogy, cooking, and baking, knitting, bird watching and playing the piano. Her uncle managed a livery service from the barn. When Nettie was born, Main St. was called The Bridgewater Road.
To celebrate this wonderful occasion, Nettie agreed to give us her great-grandmother’s recipe for blueberry cake, and once you try it, you’ll be picking extra berries at Bog Hollow or the Sheas’ farm come August.
Tinkertown Blueberry Cake
1 ½ cups fl our ½ cup sugar 1 Tablespoon baking powder ½ tsp. salt 1 ½ cups blueberries ( I use 2 c.) 1 egg ½ cup milk ¼ cup melted butter Combine fl our, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Fold in berries. In a small bowl, beat egg, milk, and melted butter. Combine wet and dry ingredients and spread in a greased 8x8” pan.
Topping ¼ cup soft butter ¾ cup packed brown sugar 1 Tablespoon fl our 1 tsp. cinnamon Combine all ingredients and dot by teaspoons over the entire batter. Bake the cake at 425 degrees for 20-25 minutes.
We owe Nettie a big thank you for this one.
Happy Birthdays! To Josh and Sydney Peters, children of Gayle Metcalf and Jonathan Peters. Josh is a freshman at UMASS Boston where he’s majoring in business administration. Sydney, a volunteer at the library, attends SLHS and is very active at St. Joseph Church.
Thank you and Congratulations to the Soul Sister Foundation which raised an impressive $12,000 at their recent Turkey Trot. The proceeds have been divided equally between the library, the recreation commission, and the fi ght for a cure for ovarian cancer. Events like this require the gifts of time and talent, and these women give so generously of both.

The Friends of the Kingston Public Library held their fi rst formal meeting in November. Acting president of the group is Gayle Metcalf, acting secretary is Mary Ann Chamberlain, and the acting treasurer is Patti Stieghorst.
Vanessa Verkade is the liaison between the Friends and the Board of Library Trustees. The Friends support the library through fundraising activities like the October book sale. Proceeds fund museum passes and special activities for children throughout the year. On Dec. 11 the group will provide refreshments for Santa’s Visit. Traditionally, Santa rides a fi re truck to the event. Library Director Sia Stewart attended the meeting for a time, emphasizing the signifi cant role the group plays in providing enhancements to existing library services. The group will meet at the library every fi rst Friday of the month, and new members are needed. Because of the enthusiastic initial response, the Friends are now discussing additional fundraisers like a second book sale, a summer tag sale, and a cookbook. The group is always looking for donations of used books, some of which go into circulation or may be sold on the book cart at the library, or will be made part of the book sale. Books may be dropped at the library at any time and are most appreciated. If you wish to support the activities of the Friends, please remember that beautiful blue, generously sized tote bags bearing the library’s name are available now for only $6 which is truly a value. These spacious totes would make great substitutes for gift bags during this holiday season.
WOW! Michelle Di Persio of Main St. has been publishing an exquisitely beautiful design magazine from her Plymouth antique store, Dovetales.
Michelle’s philosophy this holiday season is,”I will not spend bigger, but I will spend better.” The magazine, Dovetales, is sophisticated and glossy.
The photos are magnificent. There are some recipes and crafts, and a world of decorating ideas. Michelle’s brother Peter Di Persio, works the tech magic from Colorado. Also on staff is editor Andrea Doty whom many of you will remember fondly from her days as a newspaper reporter covering Kingston.
The magazine is a banquet for the eyes.
It is published four times a year and a subscription costs $15. If you wish a subscription, you may send a check to Dovetales Antiques and Home, 52 Main St., Plymouth, MA 02360. Web site address is: www.dovetalesantiquesandhome.com.

Happy Birthday! to my husband, Dan Sapir, the former newshound who will be 67 on Dec. 27. Because Dan says he’ll be the fi rst person to reverse the aging process, he will not acknowledge that number. That’s fi ne-we’ll have a nice salt-free, cholesterol- free dinner while we all watch him get younger. He’s still my Superman..
Easy Appetizer
Cut bacon into 2 inch pieces and wrap around a piece of pickled watermelon rind. ( sold in jars in the pickle section).
Fasten with a wooden toothpick and place under broiler until bacon is crisp.
Delicious. Note: if the pieces of watermelon rind are large, just cut them in halves or thirds.
